Where's Jesus?

Posted by Pastor Christopher Hull on with 1 Comments

In his work, Against the Heavenly Prophets, Martin Luther teaches about the two ways in which we understand the forgiveness of sins that Jesus works for us. Luther says, "We treat of the forgiveness of sins in two ways. First, how it is achieved and won. Second, how it is distributed and given to us. Christ has achieved it on the cross, it is true. But he has not distributed or given it on the cross. He has not won it in the Supper or sacrament. There He has distributed and given it through the Word, as also in the gospel, where it is preached."

Luther makes the confession that on the cross, Jesus purchased our forgiveness, and now in the means of grace, He hands over that forgiveness for us. Jesus, on the cross, won atonement for us. Before and after the cross, Jesus has been and will until the End of Days distribute forgiveness in His means of grace. So, what do we do when we desire to see Jesus and be forgiven? Well, Luther says, "If now I seek the forgiveness of sins, I do not run to the cross, for I will not find it given there. Nor must I hold to the suffering of Christ, as Dr. Karlstadt trifles, in knowledge or remembrance, for I will not find it there either. But I will find in the sacrament or gospel the word which distributed, presents, offers, and gives to me that forgiveness which was won on the cross." Luther makes the confession that when the conscience is burden and terrified, it should not contemplate the suffering of Jesus, but instead run to where the cross is offered for us in Baptism, the Gospel preached, Holy Absolution, the Lord's Supper, and the consolation of the brethren. Our forgiveness and salvation was worked out by Jesus on the cross, once and for all. Now, in the means of grace  we receive the gifts of Jesus death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins.

So, let us cling to this comfort alone, that the one time payment for our salvation was made by Jesus on the cross. Let us also cling to this comfort alone, that the victory of the cross is ours in the means of grace for all time so that we may be forgiven all our sins, granted life, and eternal salvation.

Peace be with you. May the devil be silenced, the world be hushed, and the Old Adam drowned anew so that you hear only the voice of your Savior Jesus who died for you on the cross and this day forgives you all your sins in the preaching of the Gospel and distribution of  the blessed sacraments, Amen.
